The Color Wheel of Life

Updated: Jul 31

Close-up of a face with vibrant paint covering skin and fingers. Bright blue eyes peek through, creating a bold, expressive look.

When I was a little girl, I loved the color pink. Through the lens of my childhood, I saw a dreamy, enchanting world of fairies, tiaras, and pixie dust; I experienced a world of innocence and wonder. When I became a teenager, my childlike fantasies evolved into something brand new. My youth soon evolved from a girl adoring pink to a young woman experiencing anger and abuse; I saw flashing red.

Coming of age can bring us to a significant turning point. On my path to self-discovery, I determined that my first love was not love at all. Life can only take us in one of two directions: forward or backward. Unfortunately, abuse can be a vicious cycle. Until we break free, it can impede progress towards our God-given potential.

Thankfully, seasons of life encourages us to grow and mature. Experiencing years of mental and physical aggression allows one to contemplate their self-worth. Leaving my abuser and -choosing me- was the greatest act of self-love I’d ever experienced. More than thirty years ago, one sunny afternoon, I sat in a car with him when I said goodbye, and I’ve never looked back.

I can no longer return to the days of my naïveté. Long gone is my admiration for pink, and red will always evoke fleeting memories I can never erase. On days like these, I’m basking in a sea of trust, loyalty, and confidence―the tranquil shades of blue. How did I get here? I found the courage to spin the color wheel of life for a final turn, and I landed just where I’m supposed to be.

I’m safe. I’m free. I’m blessed.
