Pour Me A Bourbon

Charlie stands across Main Street peering into the tinted windows of her favorite bar. She travels inside with her senses, inhaling the oak, vanilla, and caramel of a famous blend. This liquor brushes against her inner cheeks, causing her lips to softly perch. Strangers study a woman frozen in time, one who finds solace in a crisis that others might perceive as weakness. Suddenly, her euphoria fades as a child lets out a loud scream.
This is a losing battle, she thinks.
“Pour me a bourbon, straight,” she says to the bartender, salivating as the amber liquid fills two-thirds of the glass. A shaky marriage, dead-end job, and endless bills are what keep me here; I need this. The weight slips away from the depths of her mind as she indulges in the moment. If life and bourbon were a contest, there can only be one winner; Charlie holds the power to declare it. She foreshadows the champion as her thin lips press against the opaque, old-fashioned glass.
